FIFA slaps Argentina with fines, bans over World Cup final - The Hindu
FIFA has penalized Argentina with fines and player bans due to misconduct during the World Cup final. The decision underscores the governing body's commitment to maintaining discipline in football.

FIFA has imposed a series of sanctions on Argentina following their World Cup final loss to Spain, which took place on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The disciplinary actions, announced on August 22, 2026, include suspensions for several players and a significant fine for the Argentinian Football Association (AFA).
Player Suspensions and Fines
Midfielder Leandro Paredes received a 10-match suspension and was fined $90,000 for instigating a post-match brawl after Spain's 1-0 victory in extra time. Other players also faced disciplinary measures: Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-match suspension and a $90,000 fine, while Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine. Team official Roberto Ayala was suspended for three matches and fined $30,000, and Spain's Gavi was given a one-match suspension along with a $30,000 fine.
Financial Penalties for the AFA
The AFA was fined a total of $321,000 for multiple infractions, which included using the event for non-sporting demonstrations and misconduct by the team. Notably, players displayed a banner regarding the Falkland Islands after their semifinal win against England, stating, “The Falklands are Argentine,” a reference to the historical conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the islands. As part of the penalties, Argentina is required to allocate $100,000 of the fine towards initiatives aimed at combating discrimination.
In addition to the financial penalties, Argentina will have to limit spectator capacity to 50% for their next two home matches, although one match and a portion of the fine are suspended during a probationary period. These measures reflect FIFA's commitment to maintaining discipline and sportsmanship within the sport.
