Fifa president Gianni Infantino has announced the cancellation of a controversial proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup, following significant backlash from the football community. The decision comes after widespread anger and threats of boycotts from Uefa and other confederations, which highlighted the proposal's divisive nature.

Backlash and Internal Pressure

The initiative aimed to attract private investment by selling portions of the commercial rights for both the men's and women's World Cups, as well as the Club World Cup. However, it faced immediate opposition, leading to Uefa's warning of a potential boycott of future Fifa tournaments if the plan was not abandoned. Infantino's senior adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned in protest, further intensifying the internal dissent within Fifa. Kevin Lamour, Fifa's chief operating officer, criticized Infantino for a "serious lack of respect" in attempting to push the proposal through with minimal consultation.

Infantino's Statement

In a statement addressing the situation, Infantino acknowledged the divisions caused by the proposal, stating, “Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place.” He emphasized Fifa's commitment to uniting and improving the sport, announcing that the proposal would not move forward. Infantino expressed his intent to bring all parties together in the coming days to foster a spirit of collaboration and growth in football.

The proposed Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) was expected to generate significant revenue, with projections of over $10 billion (€8.7 billion) to be distributed among Fifa's 211 member associations. However, the backlash ultimately forced Infantino to reconsider the viability of the initiative, raising questions about his leadership moving forward.
