In a tightly contested match, Fenerbahçe and Lyon finished with a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Champions League playoff. Both teams showcased their strengths, leaving the tie wide open for the return leg.

Fenerbahçe and Lyon played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League playoff tie held in Istanbul on Tuesday. The match showcased a competitive spirit from both teams as they aimed for a crucial advantage in the two-legged affair.

First Half Highlights

The Turkish side began the match with vigor, creating a significant chance in the ninth minute when Vedat Muriqi narrowly missed a header from Matteo Guendouzi's cross. However, as the first half progressed, Lyon began to find their rhythm. Tanner Tessmann recorded Lyon's first shot on target in the 23rd minute, but his attempt from outside the box was easily saved. Fenerbahçe's Mason Greenwood responded with a low shot on target in the 36th minute, yet it too was thwarted by Lyon's goalkeeper.

Lyon took the lead in the 40th minute when Fenerbahçe failed to clear a cross from Corentin Tolisso. Lois Openda capitalized on the opportunity, heading the ball into the bottom corner from close range, giving the French side a 1-0 advantage as they headed into halftime.

Second Half Response

Fenerbahçe came out strong after the break, leveling the score just two minutes into the second half. Greenwood received a pass from Kerem Aktürkoğlu on the right side of the penalty area and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that found the roof of the net in the 47th minute. Lyon nearly regained the lead shortly thereafter when Openda's low shot struck the post, with goalkeeper Ederson fully extended.

The hosts maintained control for much of the second half, with Muriqi's header being saved in the 63rd minute. Substitute Nene Dorgeles came close to scoring in the 80th minute, hitting the post from inside the area as Fenerbahçe sought a late winner. Romelu Lukaku made his debut for Fenerbahçe just two minutes later, coming on for Muriqi, but neither team could find a decisive goal before the final whistle.

The draw sets up an intriguing second leg at Lyon's Groupama Stadium on August 26, where both teams will vie for a spot in the Champions League group stage.
