The A-League Men is currently undergoing an expansion process aimed at establishing new clubs within the league. Originally created to replace the National Soccer League, the A-League Men serves as Australia's only professional football league. Launched in 2004 with eight teams, the league began its inaugural season in 2005–06 and has progressively expanded into various markets across Australia and New Zealand. Starting from the 2024–25 season, the league will feature 13 clubs, following the granting of an expansion license to Auckland Football Club.

Future Prospects

There are plans for further growth, including the potential addition of teams from a second division, which would introduce a system of promotion and relegation. Football Australia, in collaboration with the Association of Australian Football Clubs, is working towards establishing this second division. The ultimate aim is to create a football pyramid that allows clubs to move between the A-League Men, the second tier, and state leagues.

Initial Teams and Expansion History

The Football Federation Australia (FFA) approached the formation of the A-League Men with caution in early 2004, implementing a 'one city – one team' principle to safeguard the development of the initial clubs. The original eight teams included Adelaide United, Brisbane Roar (formerly Queensland Roar), Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets, Perth Glory, Sydney, and New Zealand Knights. Of these, only the New Zealand Knights ceased operations after the 2006–07 season.

Expansion efforts began with the introduction of Wellington Phoenix in 2007, following the revocation of the New Zealand Knights' license due to poor attendance and performance. The league further expanded in 2009 with the addition of Gold Coast United and North Queensland Fury, marking a significant step in reaching new audiences and enhancing the league's presence in Australia.
