‘Everyone wants to play’: Skipper Ryan hurting after losing No.1 spot to Beach - The Sporting Base
Skipper Ryan shares his feelings of hurt after losing the top position to Beach, highlighting the intense competition and desire to play among athletes.

Socceroos captain Mat Ryan expressed his disappointment after being overlooked for the starting goalkeeper position in favor of Patrick Beach for the World Cup in North America. This marks the first time since 2010 that Ryan will watch the tournament from the bench, a situation he described as "hurting."
Ryan's Reaction to Selection
Ryan had remained mostly silent about his selection status following Australia's victory over Türkiye, but he has now made it clear that he still desires to contribute to the team. "Everyone wants to play," he stated, adding that anyone not feeling the disappointment of not playing shouldn't be part of the squad.
Ryan was reportedly taken aback when head coach Tony Popovic informed him of the decision just before the team's opening match at Vancouver Stadium. "The boss pulled me aside… he told me I hadn’t done anything wrong, he just had a gut feeling that he wanted to play Beachy," Ryan revealed. Despite having 104 international caps and a strong performance record with Levante UD in La Liga, Ryan found himself in this unexpected position.
Staying Focused and Ready
In light of the situation, Ryan emphasized the importance of channeling disappointment positively. "It’s about how you channel that disappointment and not detrimenting the team," he said. He acknowledged the competitive nature within the squad and expressed his readiness to step in if called upon. "I feel good and if needed then I’ll do my best," he remarked.
This isn't the first instance where Popovic has opted for another goalkeeper over Ryan, as Joe Gaucci was the preferred choice during most World Cup qualifiers. Nonetheless, Ryan recognized Beach's commendable performance against Türkiye and noted that he could not have influenced either goal in Australia’s recent 2–0 defeat to the U.S.
Looking ahead, the Socceroos face Paraguay in a pivotal Group D match, where Ryan's potential return to the starting lineup remains uncertain. As the team navigates this crucial stage of the tournament, Ryan's focus remains on what he can control, as he prepares for any opportunity that may arise.
