English investors save A-League club... well half of it | The Canberra Times | Canberra, ACT
English investors have successfully acquired a 50% stake in an A-League club, aiming to revitalize its operations and enhance its competitive edge in Australian football.

The Central Coast Mariners have secured their future in the A-League Men (ALM) competition following a takeover by the majority shareholders of English Championship club Queens Park Rangers (QPR). This development comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding the club's ownership.
New Ownership and Future Prospects
Total Soccer Growth Holdings (TSG), which also has a stake in Major League Soccer's Los Angeles FC, has been confirmed as the new backers of the Mariners. The announcement marks the end of months of speculation regarding the club's future. TSG, led by Malaysian businessman Ruben Gnanalingam, has only acquired the men's team, leaving the status of the women's side uncertain.
Since January, the Mariners have relied on support from the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) after their previous owner, Mike Charlesworth, lost his license. Gnanalingam expressed optimism about the potential for Australian football, stating, "We see Australian football as a major growth area in the sport internationally." He emphasized the importance of revitalizing the Mariners and restoring enthusiasm for the club.
Future Challenges and Management Decisions
As part of the takeover, TSG has also acquired the club's academy. However, one of the immediate challenges for Gnanalingam will be appointing a new manager for the senior men's team. Current manager Warren Moon, who received praise for leading the Mariners to a ninth-place finish in the ALM last season, has indicated that he will not continue for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign.
In addition, the APL aims to find a buyer for the Mariners' women's team within the next six weeks, as both the Mariners and their ALW rivals, Canberra United, have faced challenges off the pitch that have affected their operations.
The Mariners' new ownership marks a significant shift for the club, with hopes of revitalizing its fortunes both on and off the field.
