DRC National Football Team Cleared for 2026 FIFA World Cup

The DRC National Football Team has received official clearance to compete in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. This marks a historic moment for the team and its supporters.

The Democratic Republic of Congo's national football team has received clearance to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup following confirmation of compliance with U.S. health protocols. This announcement comes from both the Congolese football federation (FECOFA) and FIFA, ensuring that the team and its technical staff are fully prepared amid ongoing concerns regarding the Ebola outbreak.

Compliance with Health Protocols

A recent videoconference involving FECOFA President Veron Mosengo Omba, the federation's 4th Vice President, and senior FIFA officials concluded that the DRC delegation meets all health requirements set by American authorities. This meeting specifically addressed the potential impact of the Ebola epidemic on the DRC Leopards, their staff, and supporters traveling to the United States.

Key decisions made during the meeting included the cancellation of the training camp initially planned in Kinshasa to adhere to new U.S. health entry requirements. Additionally, most players selected for the World Cup squad are currently based in Europe, which reduces their risk of exposure. Team staff members who left Kinshasa on May 20 will complete a minimum 21-day stay in Europe before arriving in the U.S., fulfilling the guidelines established by American health authorities.

Support from DRC Leadership

DRC leadership has expressed satisfaction with the collaborative efforts of FECOFA and FIFA. Her Excellency Yvette Kapinga Ngandu, the DRC Ambassador to the United States, praised the team's commitment to safety and readiness. "The Leopards and its staff have demonstrated exactly the kind of responsibility, discipline, and respect that we expect from our athletes on the world stage," she stated. She also expressed confidence that the U.S. will warmly welcome the team.

Minister of Sport Didier Budimbu echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the government's support for the delegation. "The Leopards carry the pride of 100 million Congolese people, and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has done everything in its power to ensure they arrive in the United States prepared, protected, and ready to compete," he remarked. Budimbu thanked FECOFA for their prompt coordination with FIFA and reassured Congolese supporters of the government's backing.

As the DRC Leopards prepare for the World Cup, the team is poised to showcase their capabilities on the international stage, with the full support of their nation behind them.
