Following the failure of his controversial plan to privatize the commercial rights of FIFA's major tournaments, U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly intervened to support his ally in maintaining his role.

Infantino's Controversial Proposal

The initiative, named FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), aimed to transfer the commercial rights of key FIFA events, including the men's and women's World Cups and the Club World Cup, into a separate commercial entity. This entity would then offer a minority stake to external investors, with an estimated valuation of around $20 billion. The investment consortium leading this venture includes Thrive Capital, headed by Joshua Kushner, who is related to Trump through his brother Jared Kushner. Infantino argued that FIFA would still retain full control over governance and competition, claiming the investment would significantly enhance development funding for member associations, increasing payments from $8 million to $20 million per cycle, with further increases anticipated by 2035.

Opposition from UEFA and Others

The proposal faced strong opposition, particularly from UEFA, which contended that private investment would compromise football's decision-making integrity by prioritizing investor returns over sporting values. Last week, all 55 UEFA member associations unanimously supported a boycott of FIFA competitions unless the proposal was abandoned. Concerns were also voiced by Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation, particularly regarding the lack of prior consultation before the plan was made public. As resistance mounted, Infantino was ultimately compelled to withdraw the proposal.

Trump's Support for Infantino

In light of the escalating situation, Trump is reportedly willing to take significant measures to ensure Infantino remains in his position. According to a report from The Telegraph, Infantino has sought to connect with officials in the Trump administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to bolster his standing amid increasing political pressure. However, both parties have denied that such outreach occurred.
