Romero has signed a five-year contract with Atletico Madrid, a club that has shown interest in the Argentine central defender for an extended period. There was a general expectation that Spurs would permit Romero to leave this summer if a suitable offer materialized. While Inter Milan and Arsenal were also in the mix, Romero reportedly favored a move to Atletico.
