Concern for injured Kangaroo playmaker after Port loss | The Canberra Times | Canberra, ACT

The Kangaroo playmaker's injury has raised concerns after the team's recent loss to Port. Fans and teammates are eager for updates on his condition.

North Melbourne's young star George Wardlaw is facing another setback after suffering a hamstring injury during a 21-point defeat to Port Adelaide. The match, held at Adelaide Oval, ended with Port securing a 10.13 (73) to 7.10 (52) victory, marking another disappointing outing for the Kangaroos in South Australia.

Injury Concerns for Wardlaw

Wardlaw, who had previously dealt with hamstring issues that delayed his pre-season, limped off the field in the final quarter as North Melbourne struggled to maintain their lead. The Kangaroos were ahead by a goal late in the third term but managed to score only one point in the last quarter. Coach Alastair Clarkson expressed concern over Wardlaw’s injury, stating, “We’ll get that assessed during the week. We’ll just deal with it.” With this loss, North Melbourne remains in 11th place, missing an opportunity to climb into the top eight.

Port's Strong Finish

Port Adelaide finished the game strongly, scoring the last four goals to secure their victory. Mitch Georgiades and Jack Whitlock each contributed three goals, while Jason Horne-Francis delivered an impressive performance against his former team, amassing 24 disposals and nine clearances. Acting captain Zak Butters also played a crucial role, collecting 26 possessions. Under the guidance of first-year coach Josh Carr, Port currently sits in 15th place but boasts the second-best defensive record in the league, only behind Sydney.

Standout Performers

Despite the loss, North Melbourne's Harry Sheezel continued to shine, following up his previous week’s performance with 40 disposals and a goal. His midfield partners, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Colby McKercher, also made significant contributions, with Davies-Uniacke scoring a goal from his 21 touches and McKercher recording 28 disposals and a goal. Clarkson remains optimistic about the season, noting, “Our season's still alive. There’s a logjam of teams around the middle of the ladder.”

The Kangaroos will look to regroup as they assess Wardlaw's injury and prepare for their next challenge, hoping to turn their fortunes around in the coming weeks.
