COLUMBUS – The Columbus Crew have announced the acquisition of midfielder André Gomes, a free agent who last played for LOSC Lille in Ligue 1. Gomes has an extensive career, having previously played for SL Benfica, Valencia CF, FC Barcelona, and Everton, and has represented Portugal at the international level. His contract with the Crew runs through June 2027, with an option for the 2027-2028 MLS season. He will take up an international roster spot pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
Career Highlights
Born on July 30, 1993, in Grijó, Portugal, Gomes began his professional journey with SL Benfica, where he made a significant impact. He scored four goals in 41 appearances and played a crucial role in Benfica's domestic treble win in 2014. His performance in the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla FC on May 14, 2014, saw him play the full 120 minutes.
Gomes then moved to Valencia CF, initially on loan in the 2014-15 season, before the transfer was made permanent in June 2015. During his time at Valencia, he netted eight goals and provided eight assists in 78 matches. His next chapter was with FC Barcelona, where he played from 2016 to 2019, making 78 appearances and contributing three goals and four assists. He was part of the squad that won the La Liga title in 2017-18 and secured back-to-back Copa del Rey trophies in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

On the international stage, Gomes has earned 29 caps for the Portuguese National Team, contributing five assists. He was a member of the squad that won the UEFA Euro 2016, marking Portugal's first international trophy.
