Mathew Leckie, a veteran of the Socceroos, has signed a new deal with Melbourne City, ensuring he will play a sixth season in the A-League Men (ALM). This commitment extends to the 2026-27 season, with an option for an additional year. Meanwhile, Western Sydney Wanderers have announced the return of Nicolas Milanovic, a former Johnny Warren Medallist.

Leckie's Resilience and Commitment

Leckie, 35, has overcome a challenging period marked by soft-tissue injuries and hip surgery to secure his place in Tony Popovic's squad for the recent World Cup. He made history as one of only four Socceroos to participate in four World Cups, starting in Australia's second match against the United States. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury cut his tournament short.

Melbourne City has expressed confidence in Leckie's ability to return to his best form. Football director Michael Petrillo stated, "Mat has consistently shown that when he’s on the pitch, he remains one of the A-League’s most influential players." Leckie himself expressed his enthusiasm for continuing with the club, saying, "I've loved representing my hometown club over the past five years, and I’m really pleased to be staying for another season."

Milanovic's Return to Western Sydney

On Friday night, Western Sydney confirmed the anticipated return of Milanovic, who had a standout season in 2024-25, scoring 12 goals and playing a crucial role in the team's success. His impressive performance contributed to Juan Mata's limited playing time. After a year at Aberdeen, where he made 10 starts and registered one assist, Milanovic is back with the Wanderers on a three-year deal.

Milanovic shared his excitement about returning, stating, "Coming back to the Wanderers just felt right." He acknowledged the challenges he faced while playing overseas, which contributed to his growth as both a player and a person.
