Chelsea sign Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47m - BBC Sport

Chelsea has completed the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta for a fee of £47 million, enhancing their roster as they prepare for upcoming challenges.

Chelsea has officially secured the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta for a fee of approximately £47 million, including add-ons. The 21-year-old right-back has committed to a six-year contract, with the possibility of an additional year, marking him as the first player to join the club following Xabi Alonso's recent appointment as manager.

Transfer Details and Player Background

Palestra was initially set to return to his childhood club, Inter Milan, but Chelsea acted swiftly to surpass Inter's £43 million offer, also presenting a more lucrative wage package. "A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world," Palestra stated. He expressed enthusiasm about joining a squad filled with talent and praised Alonso's vision for the team's play, stating, "He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can't wait to compete in the Premier League."

Last season, Palestra was on loan at Cagliari, where he earned the title of Serie A's defender of the year. His impressive performance included attempting 73 dribbles over distances exceeding 5 meters, the highest for any defender in Serie A. He also recorded 70 successful dribbles, the most among defenders in Europe’s top 10 leagues, and won 15 fouls in the final third, tying for the most by a defender in Europe’s top five leagues last season, according to Opta.

Chelsea's Transfer Strategy

Following Palestra's arrival, Chelsea is now focusing on acquiring a centre-back, with Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix identified as a primary target. The club is also in discussions regarding Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria. Additionally, Chelsea has seen an £8 million bid for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka rejected. Xhaka previously played under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.

Furthermore, Chelsea has secured agreements for striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting, with midfielder Valentin Barco from Strasbourg also expected to join. The club is contemplating further additions, including a central midfielder and a versatile forward, but much will depend on player sales after finishing 10th in the Premier League last season and missing out on European competition.

Midfielder Enzo Fernandez is seeking a move and has attracted interest from Real Madrid, while Trevoh Chalobah is in talks with Serie A side Como. Several players, including Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto, and Tosin Adarabioyo, are facing uncertain futures at the club.
