Chelsea hit with UEFA fine for spending breach | Football London
Chelsea has been fined by UEFA for violating financial spending rules. This incident underscores the club's ongoing struggles with financial compliance.

Chelsea FC has been fined by UEFA for violating squad cost ratio regulations, receiving a total penalty of €3 million (£2.58 million), with €2 million (£1.72 million) of that being conditional.
Details of the Breach
In an official statement, Chelsea confirmed that the UEFA Club Monitoring process for the 2025/26 season has concluded, revealing the club's compliance status regarding the squad cost ratio for the 2025 calendar year. The club acknowledged that while there was a positive trend in their squad cost ratio, it narrowly exceeded the 70% threshold mandated by UEFA, resulting in the imposed fine.
Context of the Fine
UEFA's regulations stipulate that a club's squad cost ratio must not surpass 70% of its turnover. Clubs exceeding this limit face fines proportional to the extent of their overspend. Chelsea is not alone in facing penalties, as Aston Villa (€22.5 million conditional) and Newcastle United (€3 million) have also been fined for similar breaches. Aston Villa has additionally been restricted from registering new players on their A list for the 2026/27 season.
This is not the first instance of Chelsea being fined for such violations. Last year, the club received a €31 million (£26.7 million) fine, with the potential for an additional €60 million (£51.2 million) if compliance is not achieved in the next four years. UEFA noted that the fines for both Chelsea and Aston Villa considered the improvements in their squad cost ratios between 2024 and 2025, as outlined in their settlement agreements.
As part of the broader financial landscape, fellow BlueCo-owned club Strasbourg has also faced sanctions, including a €25 million (£21.5 million) fine, with €12 million (£10.3 million) conditional, alongside restrictions on player registrations.
