Chelsea eye up Marc Cucurella replacement from Premier League rival | Football | Metro News

Chelsea is actively seeking a replacement for Marc Cucurella and has identified a player from a Premier League rival as a potential target. This move comes as the club looks to strengthen its squad.

Chelsea is on the hunt for a new left-back following the transfer of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid. The Spanish club secured Cucurella early in the summer for €60 million (£52 million), creating a vacancy in the squad of incoming manager Xabi Alonso.

Targeting Leeds' Gudmundsson

With Cucurella's departure, Chelsea has set its sights on Leeds United's Gabriel Gudmundsson. The Swedish full-back has garnered attention at Stamford Bridge after a successful first season in the Premier League. Gudmundsson joined Leeds from Lille in the summer of 2025 for just over £10 million and quickly established himself as a key player, particularly in the left wing-back position.

Leeds would be reluctant to part with Gudmundsson, especially after his impressive performances helped the club maintain their Premier League status. However, with three years remaining on his contract, Chelsea may need to make a significant offer to persuade Leeds to consider a sale.

World Cup Impact

Currently, Gudmundsson is representing Sweden at the World Cup, where his performances could further enhance his market value. The 26-cap international has had a mixed tournament thus far, with Sweden defeating Tunisia 5-1 in their opener but suffering a heavy 5-1 loss to the Netherlands in their second match. They face Japan next, with their chances of advancing to the knockout stages hanging in the balance.

In addition to Gudmundsson, Chelsea is exploring other options as they embark on another rebuilding phase under a new manager. The club has already reached an agreement with Atalanta for Italy international Marco Palestra, a right-sided full-back or wing-back, for €57 million (£49 million).
