Morgan Rogers has officially joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a record-breaking transfer valued at approximately £117 million. The 23-year-old forward signed a seven-year contract, making him the most expensive signing in the club's history. The deal was finalized on Saturday.

Strong Competition for Rogers

Despite Arsenal's strong interest and ongoing negotiations with the England international, Chelsea managed to secure Rogers's signature. The chance to work under new manager Xabi Alonso played a significant role in Rogers's decision to move to Stamford Bridge. Recently, he contributed to England's third-place finish at the World Cup, starting in the semi-final loss to Argentina and the subsequent victory over France that clinched the bronze medal.

Rogers's Impressive Track Record

Rogers's versatility as a forward aligns well with Chelsea's requirements for a player capable of fulfilling multiple attacking roles. His rise at Aston Villa has been remarkable since his transfer from Middlesbrough in January 2024, where he helped the team secure a top-four finish and qualification for the Europa League. During his time at Villa Park, he scored 31 goals in 125 appearances under manager Unai Emery.

This transfer marks a significant shift for Chelsea's ownership, BlueCo, as it signals a departure from their previous strategy of acquiring primarily young, untested talent. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali hinted at the end of last season that the club would focus on signing players who could immediately contribute to their title ambitions, especially following a disappointing campaign that saw them finish 10th and exit the Champions League in the round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain. The hiring of Alonso, a two-time Champions League winner, was partly aimed at attracting high-caliber players to the club.

Rogers is the fourth signing of the summer for Chelsea, joining defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda as the club continues to revamp its squad. Earlier in June, Chelsea attempted to bring Granit Xhaka from Sunderland to reunite him with Alonso, but the club did not meet the valuation set by the Black Cats for the player, who will turn 34 in September.
