Chelsea announce £40m deal for Sporting's Geovany Quenda - BBC Sport
Chelsea has completed a £40 million transfer for Geovany Quenda from Sporting. The move aims to strengthen the team's lineup for the upcoming season.

Chelsea Football Club has confirmed the signing of winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP for a fee of £40 million. The 19-year-old has committed to an eight-year contract, marking him as the second player to join the club under new manager Xabi Alonso, following the acquisition of Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra for £42 million.
Quenda's Journey to Chelsea
Quenda, who has already made 86 appearances for Sporting's first team since debuting at the age of 16, had agreed to join Chelsea back in March 2025 during Enzo Maresca's tenure as manager. The Portugal under-21 international is versatile, capable of playing as a winger, attacking midfielder, or wing-back. He has been training at Chelsea's Cobham facility this week, even though the first-team squad is not scheduled to return until Alonso's initial session on Thursday.
Player's Excitement and Future Aspirations
"It feels great to be here," Quenda stated in his club announcement. "Chelsea is a great team and I am excited to play here at Stamford Bridge. The club has shown faith in players like me and I am proud to be here, proud to be part of this club."
"I am excited to work with my team-mates and the manager, Xabi Alonso. I'm a very hard-working young person and I like to help my team. I want to be someone known for having the right mentality to help my team-mates and who does their best for the club to win trophies."
This transfer marks Quenda's first move away from Portugal after a successful stint at Sporting, where he also made 16 appearances in the Champions League under former manager Ruben Amorim. Chelsea is actively pursuing further reinforcements, having held discussions regarding Rayo Vallecano's Pep Chavarria and Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix, while also looking to finalize a deal for Valentin Barco from Strasbourg.
In addition to incoming players, Chelsea has seen several departures, including Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Tyrique George to Everton. Andrey Santos is also set to join Manchester United following a £50 million agreement. Additionally, Chelsea announced that 19-year-old Jesse Derry has signed a new six-year contract and will be loaned to Sporting.
