Championship-winning fullback returns home - Wellington Phoenix
Wellington Phoenix has announced the return of their championship-winning fullback, bolstering their squad for the upcoming season. Fans are excited to see his impact on the team's performance.

James McGarry has made a return to the Wellington Phoenix, aiming to assist the club in securing its first major trophy. The seasoned fullback, who celebrated an A-League championship victory with Central Coast in 2023, has committed to the Phoenix for the upcoming two seasons of the Isuzu UTE A-League after parting ways with the Brisbane Roar.
Experience and Impact
At 28 years old, McGarry was a vital part of the Roar's squad during the 2025-26 season, starting in 24 out of 26 matches, where he contributed one goal and three assists. His career also includes a stint at Aberdeen FC in the Scottish Premiership, alongside his previous 38 appearances for the Phoenix during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.
Coach's Praise
Wellington Phoenix head coach Chris Greenacre expressed his enthusiasm over McGarry's signing. “Jimmy’s a big signing for the club,” he stated. “He’s got a lot of experience and at 28 he’s in his prime and is ready to kick-on in his career.” Greenacre highlighted McGarry's modern fullback capabilities, noting his attacking prowess, defensive skills, speed, and strength. He emphasized that McGarry's championship experience would be a significant asset to the team.
A Personal Mission
McGarry himself is eager to bring success back to his “hometown,” having been among the first graduates of the Phoenix academy. “I moved to Wellington when I was 15 and I’ve probably spent five or six years living there so to me it is a second home,” he shared. With this being his third tenure at the club, he feels he brings enhanced experience from his time in Europe and his championship win with Central Coast. “I want to bring that feeling to Wellington,” he added, expressing his desire for his teammates and the city to experience the joy of victory.
As McGarry rejoins the Phoenix, both he and the club are focused on achieving success in the upcoming seasons.
