Champions League holders: Paris join Real Madrid as back-to-back winners | UEFA Champions League | UEFA.com

Paris Saint-Germain has claimed the UEFA Champions League title for the second year in a row, matching Real Madrid's historic achievement of consecutive victories.

Paris Saint-Germain have made history by becoming the second club to win consecutive UEFA Champions League titles, following in the footsteps of Real Madrid.

Historic Achievement

After triumphing over Arsenal in a penalty shootout during the final held in Budapest, Paris has successfully defended their title, joining Real Madrid as the only teams to achieve this feat in the Champions League era. Real Madrid first accomplished back-to-back victories in 2017 and repeated the achievement the following year. Paris had already made headlines as the first defending champions to reach the final since Real Madrid in the 2017/18 season, and they avoided the fate of becoming the first titleholders to finish as runners-up since Manchester United lost to Barcelona in the 2008/09 final.

Defending Champions' Journey

Historically, only one defending champion has failed to advance past the initial stage of their title defense—Chelsea, who were eliminated in the group stage during the 2012/13 season. The majority of previous titleholders have exited in the knockout rounds, with seven falling in the last 16, ten in the quarter-finals, and eight in the semi-finals. Notably, only Real Madrid and now Paris have successfully navigated their way to the final without being defeated along the way.

This remarkable achievement solidifies Paris Saint-Germain's status among Europe's elite clubs, showcasing their resilience and determination in the prestigious tournament.
