Champions League final: PSG join 'greatest of all time' with back-to-back wins - BBC Sport
Paris Saint-Germain has achieved back-to-back Champions League victories, solidifying their status among the greatest teams in football history.

Paris St-Germain (PSG) solidified their reputation as one of the elite teams in European football by successfully defending their Champions League title, becoming only the second club to achieve this feat. They triumphed over Arsenal in a tense penalty shootout, winning 4-3 after the match ended in a 1-1 draw in Budapest. This victory follows their commanding 5-0 win against Inter Milan in last year's final, held in Munich.
Historic Achievement
With this win, PSG became the first team to retain the Champions League title since Real Madrid's remarkable three consecutive victories from 2016 to 2018. They are now among just ten clubs in the 71-year history of the competition to secure back-to-back titles. Manager Luis Enrique expressed his mixed emotions post-match, stating, "Excitement, fatigue - everything. But this is the best moment of the season. We are still champs, two in a row, it's amazing."
All ten outfield players who started against Arsenal were also part of the team that faced Inter Milan last year, with only goalkeeper Matvey Safonov making a change in the lineup, replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma, who transferred to Manchester City last summer. Over the past two seasons, PSG has dominated the football landscape, winning eight out of ten available trophies, missing only the Club World Cup and the French Cup.
Future Prospects
Should PSG maintain their current form, they could become the fifth team in history to win three consecutive Champions League titles. However, they still have a long way to go to surpass Real Madrid's record of five consecutive European Cups achieved between 1956 and 1960. European football journalist Julien Laurens remarked, "Tonight PSG have made history," noting that while last season's victory was special, this year's triumph required more resilience and effort.
PSG's second Champions League title places them in an elite category, as they also led the competition this season in goals scored (45) and average possession (60.5%). Laurens highlighted that this achievement elevates PSG's status, stating, "Now they are in the conversation with those great teams." With this victory, PSG has firmly established itself as a formidable force in European football.
