Celtic confirm Martin O'Neill as manager: Contract details, assistants and what Dermot Desmond said

Celtic FC has officially announced Martin O'Neill as their new manager, revealing contract details and the coaching staff. Dermot Desmond shared his enthusiasm for the appointment.

Celtic Football Club has officially announced the appointment of Martin O’Neill as their manager for the upcoming 2026/27 season. This decision follows O’Neill's successful tenure last season, where he led the team to both the Premiership title and the Scottish Cup.

Contract Details and Previous Achievements

The 74-year-old Northern Irishman has signed a one-year contract with an option for an additional year. O’Neill has a storied history with Celtic, having returned to the club twice to assist during challenging times, including after Brendan Rodgers' departure and the brief period under Wilfried Nancy. Under his leadership, Celtic secured nine major trophies, including their fifth consecutive league title and a memorable league and Scottish Cup double last month.

Future Support and Expectations

While the identities of O’Neill's assistants have yet to be confirmed, reports suggest that Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham have been offered reduced terms to remain with the club. In a statement, Celtic expressed their excitement about O’Neill’s return, highlighting his previous accomplishments, such as being the first manager in 32 years to achieve a domestic Treble in his inaugural season in 2001 and leading the team to a European final in 2003.

Dermot Desmond, Celtic's principal shareholder, praised O’Neill's qualities, stating, “Time and time again Martin has shown his qualities and what he can bring to Celtic.” He emphasized O’Neill's determination to bring success to the club and assured that the club would fully support him in preparation for the upcoming season.
