Canberra United secures new ownership, A-League seeks Central Coast A-League Women's investor

Canberra United has secured new ownership, marking a significant change for the club. Meanwhile, the A-League is actively seeking an investor for the Central Coast A-League Women's team.

The Australian Professional Leagues (APL) has successfully secured new ownership for Canberra United, a two-time champion in the A-League Women (ALW). This development comes after a period of uncertainty lasting two years, during which the team relied on support from the ACT government. The Australian Sports Group (ASG) was announced as the new owner of Canberra's license, with APL chief executive Steve Rosich expressing optimism about finding a similar resolution for the Central Coast Mariners.

Focus on Central Coast Mariners

With the ownership of Canberra United now settled, the APL is turning its attention to the Central Coast Mariners, who are in need of a new investor for their ALW team. The Mariners lost their financial backing last month, prompting the APL to expedite the search for a suitable owner. Rosich indicated that discussions are ongoing with multiple interested parties, aiming for a resolution by the end of July or the first week of August. This timeline is crucial for the timely release of the fixture list for the upcoming season.

Future Prospects

ASG, led by chief executive Theo Fotopoulos and chair Morris McAlister, will immediately take over the management of Canberra's ALW team. They also have plans to establish an A-League Men (ALM) side in Canberra for the 2028/29 season. Rosich noted that the APL is maintaining the same number of teams as last year and sees potential for women-specific investments, which could set a positive precedent for future initiatives in women's football.

The successful transition of Canberra United's ownership marks a significant step forward for the APL, and the league is hopeful that the Mariners will soon follow suit, ensuring a stable future for women's football in Australia.
