Canberra United FC has a buyer, ending years of uncertainty for the capital's A-League Women's team - ABC News
Canberra United FC has officially found a buyer, resolving years of uncertainty for the A-League Women's team. This development promises a fresh start for the club.
Canberra United FC has secured a new owner, bringing an end to years of uncertainty for the A-League Women’s team based in the capital. The Australian Sports Group (ASG) has been announced as the club's new owner, taking over from Capital Football.
New Ownership and Future Plans
After finishing the last season with doubts about the club's future, Canberra United FC is set to continue competing next season under ASG's ownership. The ASG, which began its operations this year, consists of executives with experience in marketing and Australian football. They have already expressed intentions to expand the football landscape in Canberra by potentially introducing an A-League Men's team by the 2028-29 season.
Investment in Development
The Australian Professional Leagues, which oversees the country's football competitions, has noted ASG's commitment to enhancing Canberra's elite academy pathways, fostering connections within the ACT Football community, and investing in football infrastructure. ASG's chief executive, Theo Fotopoulos, remained discreet about the purchase price but suggested it was around or above $10 million.
Fotopoulos emphasized the importance of building on the foundation laid by those involved with Canberra United FC over the past two decades. He expressed a desire to create a pathway for local talent, stating, "With the current A-League Women's program, we don't actually have a pathway, officially, which, compared to the other A-League Women's teams, is a missing component." This initiative aims to provide opportunities for young players to aspire to join the ranks of the Matildas or become A-League players.
As the only stand-alone team in the A-League Women’s competition, Canberra United FC is poised for a new chapter under ASG, with hopes of integrating a professional club structure that includes an A-League Men's team in the near future.
