Broos brushes off visa drama as Bafana eyes Mexico test
Bafana Bafana's coach, Hugo Broos, has brushed off recent visa issues as the team gears up for a friendly match against Mexico. The focus remains on delivering a strong performance.

As Bafana Bafana prepares for their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Mexico, head coach Hugo Broos remains optimistic despite recent travel disruptions caused by visa issues. The team's departure to Mexico was delayed by a day, but they ultimately left South Africa on Monday afternoon.
Focus on the Challenge Ahead
Broos expressed confidence in his squad's preparations, stating that the challenges faced in the days leading up to their departure are now behind them. He noted, “The past days have been a little bit stressful with all the problems we had but again, those problems are behind us and now we’re focused on what’s coming.” However, the team traveled without assistant coach Helman Mkhalele, who had not received his visa in time for the journey.
Warm-Up Fixture Against Jamaica
Before facing Mexico on June 11 at Mexico City Stadium, Bafana Bafana will play a warm-up match against Jamaica on Friday. Broos welcomed this opportunity, highlighting Jamaica's ranking of 71st as a good test for his team. He mentioned, “That is something we needed... I’m happy with Jamaica because they are 71st on the rankings so they will be a good opponent, and they will be the last test before the opening game.”
In addition, Broos confirmed that defender Aubrey Modiba will not participate in the friendly against Jamaica as a precaution due to a hamstring injury sustained during the CAF Champions League final. With preparations underway, Bafana Bafana is focused on making a strong impression in their World Cup opener.
