Brisbane Roar relegated from NPL Queensland as Adelaide City seal Australian Championship return

Brisbane Roar has been relegated from the NPL Queensland, while Adelaide City has successfully clinched their spot back in the Australian Championship. This outcome highlights the competitive nature of the league.

Brisbane Roar’s B team has officially been relegated from NPL Queensland, confirming their exit from the state’s top flight for the upcoming season. This decision follows a disappointing campaign where the team finished at the bottom of the league table with just 16 points, having won only five out of 22 matches and ending the season with a goal difference of -20.

Roar's Commitment to Development

In light of their relegation, Brisbane Roar released a statement reaffirming their commitment to the purpose of their B team, which is to provide young Queensland footballers with valuable senior playing time and prepare them for the professional game. The club emphasized that they have fielded the youngest squad in the competition and noted that eight players have advanced to the A-League side over the past 18 months.

James Gow, the Roar's Sporting Director, expressed the team's focus on player development, stating, “Naturally, we would prefer to be competing in NPL Queensland next season, but the fundamental purpose of our B Team is to develop players capable of playing professional football.” He highlighted the talent within the squad and the ongoing efforts to challenge and nurture these young players.

Top Scorers and Relegation Details

This season, Aaron Morris led the team as the top scorer in NPL Queensland with six goals, followed by James Durrington and Niall Thom, who each netted five. Brisbane Roar will be joined in relegation by Gold Coast United, who finished just one point shy of safety. The teams set to replace them in the Queensland Premier League 1 playoffs include Brisbane Strikers, Broadbeach United, Sunshine Coast, and Ipswich FC.

Adelaide City’s Return

In contrast to Brisbane Roar’s struggles, Adelaide City has secured their return to the national stage for the first time in 23 years. The three-time NSL champions clinched qualification for the Australian Championship by finishing at the top of NPL South Australia. Their title was confirmed with a decisive 3-0 victory over White City on the final matchday, allowing them to finish with 48 points and the league's strongest defense.

As the Brisbane Roar looks to regroup and focus on player development, Adelaide City’s successful campaign marks a significant return to prominence in Australian football.
