Brighton’s Early Dominance

Aston Villa's Struggles

Despite a bright start, where Emiliano Buendia nearly found the net with a low shot, Villa struggled to maintain their composure. Their defensive frailties were ruthlessly exploited by Brighton, who generated an impressive 2.96 expected goals (xG) from open play in the first half, marking the highest xG recorded in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League match since the 2021-22 season.

Villa's woes continued as they became only the third team in Premier League history to be down by four goals at halftime on the opening matchday. They also joined Southampton as the only team to concede four goals, receive a red card, and score an own goal in the first half of a match.

As the match progressed, Villa had a rare opportunity when Ian Maatsen hit the side netting, but they were fortunate not to fall further behind when Costinha struck the post and Charalampos Kostoulas had a goal disallowed for offside.
