Australian Sports Group: Everything you need about Canberra United's future | The Canberra Times | Canberra, ACT

This article explores the future of Canberra United, focusing on upcoming strategies and developments that will shape the team's trajectory in Australian sports.

Canberra United's new ownership, Australian Sports Group (ASG), is actively pursuing the establishment of a dedicated training base for the A-League Women club. This initiative was announced during a press conference at McKellar Park, where ASG's chief executive Theo Fotopoulos and chairman Morris McAlister confirmed their acquisition of the club.

Plans for a Training Base

Fotopoulos revealed that ASG is exploring the potential for a training facility at McKellar Park, which is considered a crucial location for the club. The new owners also plan to set up an office at the nearby Belconnen Soccer Club, which will serve as a "strategic partner." While discussions are ongoing, Fotopoulos noted that the facility at McKellar Park is one of the few private grounds available in Canberra, spanning approximately six hectares.

Previously, there were plans by Capital Football and the ACT government to develop a training base at the Throsby Home of Football, but those plans fell through due to financial constraints. Fotopoulos expressed optimism about the potential developments at McKellar Park, stating, "Football needs a home and it'd be great to be able to develop that here."

Coaching and Player Recruitment

In addition to the training base, ASG is prioritizing the appointment of a head coach for Canberra United. They have already engaged in discussions with Antoni Jagarinec, who has successfully led the team to the finals in the past two seasons. The new ownership aims to finalize the coaching position swiftly as they prepare for the upcoming season, which is set to begin on October 16.

With pre-season training scheduled to commence in six weeks, securing players will also be a key focus for the new management. The A-League Women draw is expected to be released next month, further building anticipation for the upcoming season.
