Australian Sports Group: Canberra United's future finally secured | The Canberra Times | Canberra, ACT
Australian Sports Group has successfully secured the future of Canberra United, providing a stable foundation for the club's development and success.

Canberra United's future has been secured after a prolonged period of uncertainty lasting two years. The club has officially been acquired by the Australian Sports Group (ASG), marking the first time it has a private owner.
Ownership Transition
Previously managed by Capital Football since its establishment in 2008, Canberra United faced challenges that made it difficult for the soccer federation to continue funding the team. The last season under Capital Football's management concluded, leaving the club's future uncertain until a new owner was identified. The A-Leagues are set to announce ASG as the new owner, ensuring Canberra United's participation in the upcoming 2026-27 season, which is scheduled to begin on October 16.
Future Plans
As part of their agreement with the Australian Professional Leagues, ASG has the option to introduce a men's team to compete in the A-League starting in the 2028-29 season. The timeline for this addition remains unclear, as earlier expectations suggested the men's team would join sooner. In the coming months, both ASG and the A-Leagues will conduct necessary regulatory checks, including a "fit and proper persons" assessment with Football Australia. Due to time constraints, the focus has initially been on ensuring the women's team's stability.
ASG Chief Executive Theo Fotopoulos expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting Canberra's vibrant football community and the strong support for Canberra United over the past 18 years. He emphasized ASG's commitment to fostering growth and investment in the women's team while also working towards establishing a men's team in the future. Additionally, Fotopoulos plans to re-establish Canberra's academy pathways, which were previously managed by Capital Football.
