Australian Professional Leagues: Canberra A-League future nears | The Canberra Times | Canberra, ACT

The future of Canberra's A-League team is approaching a pivotal moment, with significant developments expected to shape its trajectory in the league.

Canberra soccer fans are not only caught up in World Cup excitement but are also anticipating significant developments regarding the A-League. Recent updates indicate that the future of Canberra United and the potential establishment of an A-League Men's team are nearing resolution.

Preferred Partner Selected

Samantha Farrow, the chief executive of Capital Football, announced that the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) has identified a preferred partner for Canberra United. However, she noted that an official announcement is not expected until after June 26, with early July being a more realistic timeframe for details to emerge.

Farrow communicated to Canberra United members that the APL is finalizing its due diligence on two interested parties for ownership of the club. This follows a three-year search for a suitable partner. The APL confirmed to The Canberra Times that they had no further updates beyond last week's information, where CEO Steve Rosich mentioned he was "finalising the due diligence process."

Future of Canberra United and A-League Men's Team

The developments suggest a promising future for both Canberra United and the capital's ambition to secure an A-League Men's team. The APL had previously designated Canberra and Auckland as preferred locations for expansion in March 2023. Capital Football has been managing United but has struggled financially, marking the end of its tenure with the team after the last season.

Once the APL's preferred partner is presented to the board, which is scheduled to meet in early July, a formal announcement will follow. It is anticipated that Canberra United will participate in the upcoming A-League Women's season, while the new men's team is expected to join the A-League Men's competition in the subsequent season.

Farrow expressed optimism about the outcome, stating, "While progress has not moved as quickly as any of us would have liked, we are optimistic that a positive outcome will be achieved and announced before the end of the month."
