Australia Cup: Akol Akon eyes return as MLS talks continue | news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site for latest headlines

Akol Akon is looking to return to the Australia Cup as discussions regarding his future in Major League Soccer (MLS) are ongoing. His performance in the tournament could impact his potential move.

Sydney FC's coach Patrick Kisnorbo is concentrating on the development of 17-year-old talent Akol Akon amid ongoing discussions regarding a potential transfer to an American Major League Soccer club. The Sky Blues have reportedly turned down an initial seven-figure offer for the young prodigy, indicating their intent to retain him for the time being.

Transfer Talks Ongoing

Kisnorbo acknowledged that he does not have a say in the club's transfer decisions, emphasizing his commitment to improving Akon as a player. “To be honest, I don’t control that part of the football department,” he stated. “I just worry about what’s on the pitch, and again for me, my focus is on getting him better and better each day, not wasting time.” Meanwhile, Akon's agent, Tony Rallis, is in talks with Sydney FC's executive vice-chairman Sebastian Gray to finalize a deal, which could see Akon loaned back to the club for the 2026-27 season if a transfer occurs.

Akon's Injury Update

Akon is also in line to make his return from a calf injury in the upcoming Australia Cup quarter-final against Southern Districts Raiders. Kisnorbo expressed optimism about Akon’s recovery, stating, “He’s good. He’s back in training, so it’s great for us to have someone like that, and he’s been working really well among all the other players as well.”

In addition to Akon, Sydney FC has recently signed Nigerian forward Oriola Sunday on loan from Japanese club RB Omiya Ardija. Kisnorbo has been monitoring Sunday for several months and is confident he will enhance the team's performance. “I’ll only bring players that will add value to the team and who are good characters, and he ticks both those boxes,” he remarked. As the match against the Raiders approaches, Kisnorbo is still deciding on Sunday’s inclusion in the squad.
