Auckland FC to lose players as A-League clamps down on salary cap | RNZ News
Auckland FC is set to lose several players as the A-League tightens its salary cap rules. This change will significantly affect the team's composition and future performance.
Auckland FC is poised to lose several players ahead of the next season as new salary cap regulations in the A-League come into effect. This follows the team's historic achievement of winning the A-League men's title, marking the first time a New Zealand club has claimed the championship, with a narrow 1-0 victory over Sydney FC at a packed Mt Smart Stadium.
Changes in Salary Cap Regulations
The Australia Professional League (APL) is implementing spending limits aimed at fostering competitive balance across the league. Executive chair Stephen Conroy has emphasized that these changes are intended to build long-term foundations for growth and to maximize the revenue potential of each club. Starting from the 2026/27 season, a hard salary cap of $A3 million will be enforced, along with the allowance for one marquee player whose salary will not count against this cap. Further adjustments are expected before the 2027-28 season, introducing caps that will be relative to each club's revenue.
Auckland FC's Financial Landscape
As an expansion club, Auckland FC has enjoyed the ability to exceed the salary cap for the past two seasons. This concession was designed to compensate for salary cap exemptions that new clubs could not utilize, which are based on tenure in the league and the presence of homegrown players. Reports suggest that Auckland FC has spent nearly double what Wellington Phoenix has on player salaries over the last two seasons.
Looking ahead, Auckland FC's chief executive, Nick Becker, acknowledged that while he hopes to retain the majority of the squad, some players will inevitably depart. He noted that many players signed two-year contracts at the outset, leading to anticipated changes as contracts expire. Becker specifically mentioned Jesse Randall's move to Dundee United following his participation in the World Cup with the All Whites. The club will take a break before regrouping on July 8 to prepare for their pre-season match against English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
