Auckland FC: Striker Guillermo May to depart Black Knights after A-League triumph - NZ Herald
Striker Guillermo May is set to leave Auckland FC after celebrating their A-League championship victory. His departure marks a significant transition for both the player and the club.
Auckland FC has announced that Uruguayan striker Guillermo May will leave the club following their successful A-League campaign. After two seasons with the Black Knights, May departs as the team’s leading scorer, netting 16 goals in 58 appearances, which ranks as the second-most in the club's short history.
May's Impact and Departure
During Auckland FC's inaugural season, May was recognized as the club's most valuable player and earned a spot in the A-League Team of the Season. Unfortunately, he was unable to participate in the grand final, where Auckland secured a 1-0 victory over Sydney FC, due to a syndesmosis injury sustained in the semi-final against Adelaide United. Currently, May is in Uruguay focusing on his recovery, and his future destination remains uncertain.
“I have loved my time in Auckland. The fans, the city, the people, my teammates, everyone has been so kind and welcoming. I will be sad to go, but goodbyes are part of football,” May expressed. “I leave with good memories and two trophies, including the grand final. After two years here, I would say it is the best experience of my life.”
Coach's Tribute and Future Plans
Auckland FC coach Steve Corica praised May's contributions, stating he will be remembered fondly by fans and teammates alike. “He has been a great player for us, a great teammate for the boys, and certainly endeared himself to the fans,” Corica remarked. “Gone, but certainly not forgotten.”
In the wake of their championship victory, Auckland FC is actively preparing for the 2026-27 season. The club has re-signed key players, including grand final hero Cam Howieson and goalkeeper Michael Woud. Reports suggest that All Whites midfielder Lachlan Bayliss has also signed while training in the United States ahead of the World Cup. Meanwhile, central defender Dan Hall is attracting interest from clubs in Asia, and the futures of midfielder Felipe Gallegos and vice-captain Jake Brimmer remain uncertain. Additionally, the club has confirmed that young players Jimmy Hilton, Adama Coulibaly, and Finn McKenlay will not return next season.
