Auckland FC signs All Whites midfielder, search ongoing for new coach

Auckland FC has bolstered its squad by signing an All Whites midfielder. The club is still actively seeking a new head coach to guide them forward.

Auckland FC has officially announced the signing of All Whites midfielder Lachlan Bayliss as the club navigates a transitional period, including the search for a new head coach following significant changes in its coaching staff and player roster.

Bayliss Joins After Successful Season

Lachlan Bayliss becomes the first new addition to Auckland FC since the team celebrated its A-League Championship victory in May. His signing follows the departure of head coach Steve Corica and assistant Danny Hay, who are set to join Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan. The 23-year-old midfielder had an impressive season with the Newcastle Jets, contributing to the team’s success by winning both the Australia Cup and the Premier's Plate. Over three seasons, Bayliss made 62 appearances for the Jets, scoring five goals during his last campaign.

International Experience and Ambitions

Currently representing New Zealand at the World Cup in Canada, Bayliss has earned two caps for the national team and also participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Expressing his excitement about joining Auckland FC, he stated, “To be joining Auckland off the back of a World Cup is a dream. There’s no better time to be a New Zealand footballer, and I want to bring that energy to Auckland FC.” He acknowledged the club's ambition and the passionate support from its fans, which he experienced firsthand as an opponent.

Future Plans for the Club

Auckland FC's director of football, Terry McFlynn, highlighted Bayliss's energetic and versatile playing style, emphasizing his technical ability to impact games offensively. As the club prepares for the upcoming season, it is also working to find a new manager. Chief executive Nick Becker expressed confidence in securing the right candidate, especially as several key players, including Dan Hall, Guillermo May, and Jesse Randall, have left the club. With the loss of salary cap exemptions next season, Auckland FC is looking to manage its resources carefully.

Bayliss is expected to join his new teammates upon returning from the World Cup, marking the beginning of a new chapter for both him and Auckland FC as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
