Auckland FC has appointed Pedro Moreira as their new head coach ahead of the upcoming A-League season, concluding a month-long search for a successor to championship-winning manager Steve Corica. Corica departed in June to join Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan's J-League.

Moreira's Vision for the Club

Moreira, a Portuguese manager, aims to build on the success of Auckland FC's first two seasons. Club chairman and majority owner Bill Foley expressed confidence in Moreira, stating, “Off the back of the club’s successful first two seasons, we wanted to maintain that momentum and appoint someone who would come into the league and be a step above the rest. We believe Moreira is that person.” Director of football Terry McFlynn echoed this sentiment, noting the club's strong belief in Moreira's capabilities.

The 31-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as an assistant to renowned Portuguese manager Paulo Fonseca at clubs like AS Roma, FC Porto, and Shakhtar Donetsk. Moreira transitioned to a head coaching position in 2022, with brief tenures at Casa Pia and Torreense in Portugal, and most recently led Pakhtakor FC to a second-place finish in the Uzbekistan Super League.

In his first comments as head coach, Moreira expressed enthusiasm for the challenge ahead, stating, “Coming in to coach this side in a country that is still developing its love of the beautiful game is a unique opportunity that I can’t wait to get started with.” He highlighted the club's achievements, mentioning its two trophies and passionate fanbase, and emphasized his commitment to fostering young talent within the squad.

As part of the new coaching setup, Auckland FC's OFC Pro League coach Luke Casserly will serve as Moreira's assistant. The upcoming season promises to be an exciting chapter for the club as they look to build on their recent successes.
