Auckland FC A-League champions after second season | RNZ News
Auckland FC has emerged as A-League champions following a remarkable second season, highlighting their development and success in the league.
Auckland FC has claimed the A-League championship title following their second season in the league, achieving the coveted prize with a 1-0 victory over Sydney FC in the grand final held at a sold-out Go Media Stadium.
Howieson's Historic Goal
The decisive moment of the match came from midfielder Cam Howieson, who scored the only goal of the game in the 60th minute. Howieson, who has been a part of Auckland football for nearly a decade and was one of the club's inaugural signings, marked the occasion by netting his first goal for the team on such a significant stage.
The grand final, notable for being the first A-League championship hosted outside of Australia, started cautiously. Auckland FC controlled the first half, creating more opportunities while Sydney FC focused on building from the back. The halftime score remained 0-0, but Auckland struck first after the break, capitalizing on a defensive error from Sydney.
A Memorable Atmosphere
The match drew a crowd of 28,374 fans, necessitating temporary seating to accommodate the large turnout. While Auckland FC is known for its vibrant atmosphere, including a popular slide and a football-themed bouncy castle, the latter was absent this time due to the additional seating.
Supporters were in high spirits leading up to the match, with chants of "up the port" and "ole ole ole" echoing from fans making their way to the stadium. A parade featuring over 200 fans, complete with drums and flags, added to the festive atmosphere more than an hour before kickoff. Many fans expressed confidence in their team's chances, with one supporter declaring, "ours to win tonight," while another predicted a 1-0 victory.
Despite the excitement, a flare thrown from the crowd after the goal marred the celebration for some. Nonetheless, Auckland FC's triumph marks a historic achievement for the club and its supporters, solidifying their place in A-League history.
