Atlanta United has officially signed forward Breel Embolo from Stade Rennais, securing him under a contract that will extend through the 2029-30 season. The 29-year-old will take up a Designated Player role and occupy an international roster spot, pending the acquisition of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
Embolo's Impressive Background
Chris Henderson, Atlanta United's Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director, expressed enthusiasm about Embolo's arrival, highlighting his talent and experience in top-tier soccer. "We’re pleased to bring a player with Breel’s combination of talent and experience at the highest levels of world soccer to Atlanta United,” Henderson stated. He noted Embolo's strong performance at the recent World Cup with Switzerland, along with his proven ability to contribute goals across various European leagues. Career Achievements
Throughout his career, Embolo has made 380 professional appearances, scoring 100 goals and providing 66 assists while competing in the top divisions of Switzerland, Germany, and France. His European experience includes 30 appearances in the UEFA Champions League and 27 in the UEFA Europa League, where he has netted four goals and provided four assists in each tournament.
Embolo began his football journey with Swiss youth clubs FC Nordstern BS and BSC Old Boys before joining the FC Basel Academy in 2010. He made his First Team debut at 17 during a Europa League match against Salzburg on March 13, 2014. Over three seasons with Basel, he scored 31 goals and contributed 21 assists in 90 matches, helping the club secure three consecutive Swiss league titles from 2013 to 2016. His standout performance in the 2015 season earned him the Swiss Super League Player of the Year award.
After his time at Basel, Embolo moved to FC Schalke 04, where he scored 12 goals and provided nine assists in 61 appearances from 2016 to 2019. He later transferred to Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he continued to excel, recording 25 goals and 20 assists in 106 matches over three seasons. His first season with Mönchengladbach saw him contribute eight goals and eight assists, aiding the team in qualifying for the Champions League.
