Atlanta United has officially signed Swiss striker Breel Embolo from Stade Rennais, as announced by the club on Sunday. The transfer marks one of the highest fees in MLS history, reportedly around $18 million, and Embolo will be under contract until the end of the 2029-30 MLS season, taking up a Designated Player roster spot.

The 29-year-old Embolo joins Atlanta shortly after the club loaned fellow Designated Player Emmanuel Latte Lath to Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. Chris Henderson, the club's chief soccer officer and sporting director, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "We’re pleased to bring a player with Breel’s combination of talent and experience at the highest levels of world soccer to Atlanta United." Henderson highlighted Embolo's recent strong performance at the World Cup and his proven goal-scoring ability across various top European leagues.

Throughout his career, Embolo has made a significant impact, recording 100 goals and 66 assists in 380 professional matches. His journey began with FC Basel in Switzerland and included stints at Schalke 04 and Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany, as well as AS Monaco and Rennes in France. On the international stage, he has scored 26 goals in 92 appearances for Switzerland, contributing to their quarterfinal run in the 2026 World Cup with two goals and two assists. Embolo has participated in three World Cups and three UEFA European Championships.

As Atlanta United seeks to improve its offensive output—having scored the fewest goals in the Eastern Conference this season—Embolo's arrival is expected to provide a much-needed boost.
