Aston Villa has officially secured the signing of midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a club record fee exceeding £50 million. This transfer surpasses the previous record of £50 million that Villa paid Everton for Amadou Onana two years ago.

Manzambi's Journey to Villa Park

The Switzerland international, who is just 20 years old, was initially set to join Newcastle last week after the Magpies reached an agreement with Freiburg. However, Aston Villa acted swiftly to make Manzambi their priority target, and he ultimately chose Villa Park as his new home.

Manzambi had an impressive performance at the World Cup, scoring three goals as Switzerland advanced to the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Argentina. He also faced Aston Villa in the Europa League final in Istanbul, where Villa triumphed 3-0, marking the club's first trophy in 30 years. His standout season included being named the Europa League Young Player of the Season, with seven goals in 47 appearances as Freiburg finished seventh in the Bundesliga.

Midfield Reinforcements Needed

This signing comes at a crucial time for Villa, who are in need of midfield reinforcements following the sale of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35 million, triggered by the player's release clause. Additionally, Villa will be without Onana until next year due to a serious knee injury sustained during the World Cup.
