Argentina's Otamendi, Ecuador's Caicedo get 2026 World Cup amnesty as FIFA tweaks rules - Yahoo Sports
FIFA has introduced a new amnesty for players like Argentina's Nicolás Otamendi and Ecuador's Moisés Caicedo, allowing them to participate in the upcoming 2026 World Cup despite previous eligibility concerns.

Argentina's Nicolas Otamendi is set to participate in his team's opening match of the World Cup against Algeria, following a recent decision by FIFA's Bureau of the Council to revise tournament regulations. This amendment allows players who received red cards during World Cup qualification to have their suspensions lifted, provided the infractions were not for serious offenses.
FIFA's New Regulations
Otamendi was sent off during Argentina's last World Cup qualifying match, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Ecuador in Guayaquil. Under the previous rules, this would have resulted in a suspension for the next official match. However, FIFA's updated regulations state that "single yellow cards and pending one- or two-match suspensions as a consequence of cautions in different matches in the preliminary competition, an indirect red card, or a direct red card for denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity or for serious foul play are not carried over to the final competition." This change means that only more serious offenses will result in suspensions carried into the World Cup finals.
Impact on Ecuador
Ecuador also benefits from this rule change, as their star attacker Moises Caicedo will be available for their World Cup opener against Ivory Coast in Philadelphia. Caicedo was also sent off in the same match against Argentina, but like Otamendi, he will not face a suspension for the tournament's initial games.
As the World Cup approaches, national teams are now focusing on their preparations for the prestigious event, with players like Otamendi and Caicedo set to make significant contributions to their respective squads.
