FIFA has announced disciplinary measures against the Argentina Football Association and several individuals following a post-match brawl that occurred after the 2026 World Cup final, where Argentina lost to Spain 1-0. The confrontation escalated after the final whistle, with Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes notably grabbing Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat, prompting intervention from players and officials.

Disciplinary Actions and Fines

Following an investigation into the incident, FIFA found the Argentina FA and its supporters guilty of multiple violations of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The charges included team misconduct, using the sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations, and discriminatory abuse, which was attributed to “discriminatory chants and gestures” from Argentina supporters. Consequently, the Argentina FA has been fined $321,000 and will face restrictions on stadium capacity for their next two home matches, limited to 50 percent.

Player Suspensions

Paredes received the most severe penalty, receiving a 10-match suspension along with a $90,000 fine for his involvement in the altercation. Defender Nahuel Molina was also suspended for seven matches and fined $90,000. Additionally, Thiago Almada and Pablo Martín Páez Gavira each received a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine. Team official Roberto Ayala was suspended for three matches and fined $30,000 for his role in a separate incident involving Spain midfielder Dani Olmo.
