If the transfer is finalized, it will mark the second-highest sale in Newcastle's history, following the £125 million transfer of Alexander Isak last summer. Gordon, who was Newcastle's top goalscorer this season with 17 goals, had signed a long-term contract extension in October 2024, which still has four years remaining. However, he was an unused substitute in the last four matches of the season as the club aimed to protect him ahead of the anticipated move.

Newcastle's CEO, David Hopkinson, previously indicated that the club might need to sell players to facilitate significant purchases this summer. Despite Bayern Munich's initial interest in Gordon, reports suggest they are no longer pursuing the player.
