Ange's old Japanese powerhouse goes for an Aussie again | The Canberra Times | Canberra, ACT
Ange Postecoglou's Japanese team is on the lookout for another Australian player, reflecting a growing trend of cross-cultural recruitment in football.

Steve Corica has made the move from the A-League to Japan, taking on a prestigious coaching role with Yokohama F Marinos. This transition marks Corica as the latest Australian to lead the renowned Japanese club.
Corica's Journey to Yokohama
Previously, Corica served as the inaugural coach for Auckland FC during the 2024/25 season, where he guided the team to an impressive A-League championship victory. Auckland FC achieved this milestone by defeating Sydney FC 1-0 in the grand final, a significant win as it was the first time a New Zealand club had secured the A-League title. This victory was particularly poignant for Corica, as he had been dismissed from his role as head coach at Sydney FC in 2023.
Replacing Oshima at Yokohama
Corica takes over from Hideo Oshima, who was let go after the club finished seventh in Group A of the J1 League. Over the past eight years, several Australians, including Ange Postecoglou and Kevin Muscat, have coached Yokohama F Marinos, with varying degrees of success. While Postecoglou and Muscat brought home trophies and garnered international interest, Kewell and Kisnorbo had shorter tenures, lasting just seven and two months, respectively.
A Personal Return to Japan
This new role is a return to Japan for Corica, who played for Sanfrecce Hiroshima from 2000 to 2001. Expressing his excitement, the 53-year-old stated, "I am incredibly proud and honoured to be returning to Japan." He emphasized his commitment to the club, saying, "I have come here with a clear ambition – to win trophies, restore a winning mentality and re-establish the culture and standards that have made this club one of the most successful in Japan." Corica also promised that his team would play "exciting football" and compete for titles.
With a rich history as both a player and coach, Corica's appointment is seen as a significant step for Yokohama F Marinos as they look to reclaim their status in Japanese football.
