Ange Postecoglou explains why he joined Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr and addresses his famous 'second season' trophy claim – Greek City Times
In a recent interview, Ange Postecoglou explained his motivations for joining Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr and reflected on his famous assertion regarding winning trophies in his second season.

Australian coach Ange Postecoglou has embraced the opportunity to lead Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr, viewing it as a compelling challenge as he embarks on a new journey in Saudi Arabia. Postecoglou, who has previously managed Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic, and the Socceroos, has signed a two-year contract with the Saudi Pro League champions following the exit of Jorge Jesus.
Building on Recent Success
Postecoglou steps into a squad filled with talent, including stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mané, Kingsley Coman, and João Félix. The expectations are high after Al Nassr recently clinched their first league title since 2019. In his inaugural interview with the club, Postecoglou emphasized that embracing new challenges has been a hallmark of his coaching career. “The most important thing for me is that throughout my whole career I’ve enjoyed taking on new challenges, new competitions, working with different people and growing from that,” he stated.
He expressed enthusiasm about the potential for success at Al Nassr, highlighting his previous experiences with both struggling and successful clubs. “I’ve taken over clubs that weren’t successful and made them successful, and I’ve taken over clubs that were already successful and continued that success. I’m excited by the possibilities of what we can achieve,” he added.
Experience in Asian Football
While this marks Postecoglou's first venture in Saudi Arabia, he is no stranger to Asian football, having led Yokohama F. Marinos to the J1 League title in Japan in 2019. He acknowledged the unique challenges that come with coaching in Asia, stating, “People sometimes think because it’s in Asia it’s easier, but I’ve always said the success I’ve had there was incredibly hard-earned.” He also recognized the significant growth of the Saudi Pro League, noting that it has become one of the strongest competitions in Asia.
Postecoglou praised the stability and ambition of Al Nassr, crediting Jorge Jesus for his outstanding work in winning the league title. “Now the club is ready to go to the next level, and that’s why I’m here,” he remarked.
Aiming for Continuous Success
Postecoglou's mindset remains focused on achieving success, regardless of the location. “Every year I start with the same thought: I want this year to be the best year ever. It doesn’t matter what happened in the past,” he said. He emphasized the importance of hard work in the pursuit of victory, stating, “Winning gives you a taste for more success, but you also have to remember the hard work.”
As he begins this new chapter with Al Nassr, Postecoglou is determined to build on the club's recent achievements and continue striving for excellence in the competitive landscape of Asian football.
