Ancelotti relaxed about Neymar World Cup availability - Yahoo Sports
Carlo Ancelotti remains optimistic about Neymar's availability for the World Cup, showcasing a calm demeanor regarding the player's recovery.
Brazil's head coach Carlo Ancelotti is taking a cautious approach regarding star forward Neymar's recovery from a calf injury as the team prepares for the World Cup. Ancelotti made these comments on Tuesday while the squad arrived in the United States for the tournament.
Neymar's Injury Status
Previously, Ancelotti had indicated that Neymar would likely be ready for Brazil's "first or second" group stage match. Last week, team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed that Neymar, who is 34 years old, had sustained a calf injury that would sideline him for up to three weeks. Following Brazil's arrival in Newark, Ancelotti stated, "He's progressing well, he's doing well, we're in no rush."
Surprising Inclusion in the Squad
Neymar's selection in Ancelotti's 26-man World Cup squad was unexpected, especially considering he has not represented Brazil in nearly three years and has faced numerous injuries in recent seasons. As Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer with 79 goals in 128 appearances, this tournament marks Neymar's fourth World Cup appearance.
Despite Brazil's less intimidating reputation compared to previous tournaments, Ancelotti remains confident in his team's capabilities. Brazil finished fifth in South American qualifying and has suffered losses to France, Japan, and Bolivia over the past year. Ancelotti emphasized the team's determination, stating, "We want to compete with opponents, try to do our best, work hard -- everyone knows what Brazil's expectations are." Veteran midfielder Casemiro echoed the sentiment, noting the high expectations from fans back home as they aim for a sixth World Cup title.
Brazil is placed in Group C and will face Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland in the group stage.
