Alessandro Circati signs with Portuguese giants SL Benfica | Socceroos
Alessandro Circati has signed with SL Benfica, one of Portugal's top football clubs. This move is expected to enhance his development and contribute to the Socceroos' future.

Alessandro Circati has officially joined SL Benfica, one of Portugal's premier football clubs, marking a significant milestone in his career as he becomes the most expensive Australian footballer to date.
Transfer Details
The 22-year-old defender has made the switch from Serie A's Parma Calcio for a reported fee of €20 million (approximately $32.7 million AUD), which may include additional performance-related add-ons. Circati has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at Benfica until June 2031. This transfer follows the recent move of fellow Australian player Nestory Irankunda, who signed with Benfica's rivals, Sporting CP, also until 2031.
Career Highlights
Circati has established himself as one of Europe's most promising defenders, playing a pivotal role in Parma's promotion to the Italian top flight in 2024. He showcased his talents on the international stage during the FIFA World Cup™ 2026, where he played every minute of Australia's four matches. Over his time at Parma, Circati made 96 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing three assists since his debut in February 2022.
Now, under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Marco Silva, who joined Benfica on a two-year deal in June, Circati is set to make his mark at the iconic Estadio da Luz. Expressing his excitement about the move, Circati stated, “It's a huge honour, a privilege. I'm over the moon, I couldn't be happier. I think it's a reward for many years of hard work. I'm so happy to be here, and I can't wait to play for Benfica."
Significance of the Move
Circati's transfer to Benfica is notable not only for its financial implications but also for its historical context, as he becomes the first Australian to join the first team of Benfica, although several Australians have previously played in the club's academy. Benfica is renowned for its success, having won the Primeira Liga 38 times and the European Cup twice in the early 1960s. Circati joins a growing list of Socceroos who have recently made moves following their World Cup performances, indicating a bright future for Australian footballers on the international stage.
