AFL Statement - Max Knobel

The AFL has released a statement highlighting Max Knobel's impact on the field. His performance has garnered attention and praise from fans and analysts alike.

The AFL has announced that Gold Coast Suns player Max Knobel has been found guilty of breaching AFL Rule 2.3(a) (Conduct Unbecoming) following an incident that took place during the VFL Round 11 match against the Brisbane Lions. The incident occurred in the second quarter and was reported to the AFL by the Gold Coast Suns after the match on Saturday afternoon.

Investigation Findings

During the investigation conducted by the AFL Integrity Unit, Knobel admitted to using a highly offensive homophobic slur directed at an opponent from the Brisbane Lions. As a result of his actions, he has received a four-match suspension. This sanction aligns with previous cases where players have self-reported similar conduct, shown remorse, and issued apologies.

Consequences and Education

Knobel will be ineligible to participate in any matches for the Gold Coast Suns during Rounds 14 to 17 of the AFL season, as well as any corresponding VFL matches. Additionally, he will be required to undergo further education on LGBTQI+ inclusion.

AFL Chief Operating Officer Tom Harley emphasized the league's commitment to respect and inclusion, stating, “Homophobia and homophobic language have absolutely no place anywhere and we will continue to stamp out any conduct that does not reflect our values.” He acknowledged Knobel's self-reporting and acceptance of responsibility but noted that the incident highlights the ongoing need for improvement in creating a safe and inclusive environment within the sport.
