Adelaide United primed for fiery clash with physical Auckland FC

Adelaide United is gearing up for a challenging match against Auckland FC, known for their physical style of play. Fans can anticipate an intense and competitive clash.

Adelaide United is gearing up for a challenging encounter against Auckland FC in the first leg of their semi-final this weekend, according to midfielder Ethan Alagich. The Black Knights secured their place in this two-legged tie by defeating reigning champions Melbourne City in a dramatic penalty shootout last weekend, while the Reds enjoyed a week off after finishing second in the regular season.

Preparation and Challenges Ahead

This break could prove beneficial for Adelaide, as they were able to rest and observe Auckland FC, who faced injury struggles but managed to secure their victory on home turf. Despite the time off, Alagich acknowledges the physical battle that awaits them at Go Media Stadium. “Obviously we know what type of team they are. They’re a strong team, and they’ll use that and rightly so,” he stated during a media session on Tuesday.

Alagich believes that Adelaide is well-equipped to handle the physicality of their opponents. “I don’t think we’re too out of size. I think we’ve got some tall boys as well and I think that goes a little bit unnoticed. No matter how big or small our team is we’re going to be ready for the fight and we’ll give back whatever they give us,” he added.

Confidence in Their Abilities

Adelaide United has shown significant improvement as the season progressed, culminating in a dramatic 2-1 victory over Melbourne City that secured their second-place finish and a spot in the AFC Champions League Elite playoffs for the next season. Alagich is confident in his team's capabilities, stating, “We don’t fear anyone. I think we’re the best football playing team (or) one of the best football playing teams in the league.” He emphasized that their season's performance has demonstrated their potential and that they should not be intimidated by any opponent.

However, the Reds will be without joint Golden Boot winner Luka Jovanovic, who is suspended for the first leg after receiving a red card in the final match of the previous season. Brazilian veteran Anselmo de Moraes is expected to step into the starting lineup in his place, bringing additional strength to the squad. Alagich praised de Moraes, noting, “I mean, you look at him and he’s just a unit. He’s a strong guy and no one can win the ball off him.” He highlighted the impact de Moraes has made when fit, underscoring his importance to the team.

As the semi-final approaches, Adelaide United is poised to face Auckland FC with determination and confidence, ready to showcase their skills on the pitch.
