2026 World Cup: FIFA slaps Argentina with heavy sanctions: 10-match ban for Paredes and 7 for Molina - Lapresse.US

Argentina faces significant penalties from FIFA, with Leandro Paredes receiving a 10-match ban and Nahuel Molina a 7-match ban, impacting their World Cup preparations.

FIFA has imposed significant sanctions on Argentina following a brawl that occurred at the conclusion of the World Cup final against Spain. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has been notified of the disciplinary measures enacted by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee, which include player suspensions and fines totaling approximately 275,000 euros.

Player Suspensions and Fines

Among the penalties, Leandro Paredes faces a ten-match suspension alongside a fine of $90,000, while Nahuel Molina has been handed a seven-match ban and a similar fine. Thiago Almada will serve a one-match suspension and also incur a $30,000 fine. Additionally, assistant coach Roberto Fabián Ayala has been suspended for three matches and fined $30,000.

Additional Sanctions Against AFA

FIFA has also levied fines against the AFA for various infractions, including a $10,000 penalty for displaying the Falkland Islands flag and a $20,000 fine for inappropriate spectator conduct. The Argentine fans were found to have engaged in racist, homophobic, and discriminatory chants during matches against several teams, leading to a $100,000 fine, with an equivalent amount suspended for six months. Furthermore, the AFA must partially close 50 percent of the stands during the next official home match, with a similar sanction suspended for one year, contingent on no further violations of this nature.

The AFA is required to invest the fine amount in developing a comprehensive plan aimed at combating discrimination, which must be approved by FIFA. As an alternative to the stand closure, the federation may allocate some of the closed seats to community groups and organizations focused on anti-discrimination efforts. Additional fines totaling $91,000 have been imposed due to incidents involving Argentine supporters throwing objects onto the pitch, which caused delays and breaches of FIFA's security protocols. The suspensions for the players will take effect during the next official matches for the senior men's national team.
