FIFA has revealed a significant 50% increase in the prize money for teams participating in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This announcement comes amid growing criticism regarding the high cost of tickets for the tournament.

Record Financial Distribution

The total financial distribution approved by FIFA's council for the event amounts to a record $727 million (£544.8 million). The winners of the World Cup will receive $50 million (£37.4 million), while the runners-up will be awarded $33 million (£24.7 million). Teams that do not advance past the group stage will still receive $9 million (£6.7 million). Additionally, each qualified team will be granted $1.5 million (£1.1 million) to help cover their preparation costs, ensuring that every participating member association is guaranteed at least $10.5 million (£7.8 million).

FIFA's Commitment to Financial Contribution

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that these payments signify the World Cup's groundbreaking financial contribution to the global football community. The organization has also projected record revenues of $13 billion (£9.7 billion) for the 2023-2026 cycle. This announcement follows FIFA's introduction of a limited number of £45 tickets for all 104 matches, a response to public outcry regarding ticket pricing.

Tom Greatrex, chair of the Football Supporters' Association, commented on the record prize fund, emphasizing that it reflects the substantial financial resources associated with the World Cup. He urged FIFA to take further action to preserve the essence of the tournament, warning against potential missteps in their pricing strategy.

In addition to the prize money increase, FIFA's council has also approved the creation of a post-conflict recovery fund aimed at promoting football's unifying values. This initiative follows President Infantino's announcement at the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit for Peace on October 13, 2025, regarding the establishment of a support mechanism for regions affected by conflict. The fund will be subject to strict oversight and will complement existing FIFA programs.
